MEXICO VERSUS TEXASMexico versus Texas, a novel said to be the first fiction written in English in Texas, was published anonymously and printed by N. Siegfried in Philadelphia in 1838. It was republished in New York in 1842 under the title Ambrosio de Letinez: or The First Texian Novel, by A. F. Myrtle, a pseudonym, probably, for Anthony Gamilh, who copyrighted the work in 1842. The book was advertised as a descriptive novel picturing the countries bordering on the Rio Grande, with most of the characters real persons and the incidents those of the Texas War of Independence. A facsimile reproduction of the 1842 edition was printed in 1967 by the Steck Company of Austin.
